JROTC

Stated objectives of the program include: patriotism and good citizenship, leadership, self-reliance, and responsiveness to constituted authority, knowledge of basic military skills, and appreciation of the importance of physical fitness, the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Students choosing to enroll in the course should plan on some out-of-school activities as well as wearing of their military uniform on campus periodically.

JROTC completed satisfactorily for two (2) years fulfills a student's communication requirement for graduation from BHS. (Does not apply to 9th graders fall 2009 or later = communications not required)

JROTC completed satisfactorily for three (3) years fulfills a student's PE requirement for graduation from BHS.

JROTC I -- 2111

Duration: All year Credit: 1 Credit

Elective: Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Content: The course includes basic citizenship, communication, leadership, map reading, US military historyand physical fitness. Optional activities: Color Guard, Drill Team, Rifle Team, and Raider Team. Students choosing to enroll in the course should plan on some out-of-school activities as well as wearing their military uniform on campus periodically.

JROTC II -- 2112

Duration: All year Credit: 1 Credit

Elective: Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Must have completed ROTC I

Content: This course is an upper class level work that builds on fundamentals learned in ROTC I. Course includes: Leadership training and opportunities to serve on cadet staff, first aid, map reading, American military history, physical fitness, career opportunities, technology awareness, role of US

Army, marksmanship, and safety. Optional activities: Cadet Company Level Staff, Color Guard, Drill Team, and Rifle Team.

JROTC III - 2195

Duration: All year Credit: 1 Credit

Elective: Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: Must have completed ROTC I and II

Content: This course is for the upper class. Emphasis is on leadership and training. Cadets in this year will comprise the battalion staff with the responsibility to plan, coordinate and execute cadet activities and functions. Course includes: communication, leadership, cadet challenge, map reading,military history, role of US military forces, lesson preparation

and presentation, human relations, military justice system, and physical fitness. Optional activities include: Cadet Battalion staff, assistant instructors, leadership of Color Guard, Drill Team, Rifle Team, and Raider Team.

JROTC IV -- 2199

Duration: All Year Credit: 1 credit

Elective: Grade 12

Prerequisite: Must have completed ROTC III

Content: This course is for the fourth-year JROTC student. Emphasis is on the battalion senior leadership. Cadets will plan and execute all the major JROTC activities. They will assist the instructors on drill & ceremonies, map reading, cadet challenge, and physical fitness. Cadets at this level will be considered for appointments to service academies and senior ROTC programs with colleges & universities. Optional activities include Cadet Battalion Commander, Battalion Executive Officer, leadership of color guard, drill teams, rifle teams, and raider team.
